It is the station church for the Thursday of the fifth week in Lent. The church was founded in the early Middle Ages , probably in the 7th century. It is first mentioned in the Liber Pontificalis under Pope Hadrian I , using spolia from the ruins of an imperial building. The first priests who served the church were probably eastern Basilian monks who had fled from persecution during the iconoclast period. It is listed in the Catalogue of Turin as a papal chapel with eight clerics and in was granted to the Jesuits by Pope Gregory XIII , and it was used as the church of the next-door Collegium Germanicum in the Palazzo di Sant'Apollinare, which was later united with the Hungarian College to form the Collegium Germanicum et Hungaricum.
It was erected by the Ostrogothic king Theodoric the Great as his palace chapel during the first quarter of the 6th century as attested to in the Liber Pontificalis. According to legend, Pope Gregory the Great ordered that the mosaics in the church be blackened, as their golden glory distracted worshipers from their prayers. The basilica was renamed again in AD when relics of Saint Apollinaris were transferred from the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare in Classe because of the threat posed by frequent raids of pirates from the Adriatic Sea. Its apse and atrium underwent modernization at various times, beginning in the 6th century with the destruction of mosaics whose themes were too overtly Arian or which expressed the king's glory, but the mosaics of the lateral walls, twenty-four columns with simplified Corinthian capitals , and an Ambo are preserved. On some columns, images of arms and hands can be seen, which are parts of figures once representing praying Goths and Theodoric's court, deleted in Byzantine times.
The ancient basilica of Emperor Theodoric is one of the most beautiful churches in Ravenna , both for its history and the mysteries that lie behind its walls. The basilica, in fact, was built in the fifth century by Theodoric and decorated according to Aryan standards. To this period belong the mosaics of the church, that have been changed during the conversion to the Catholic worship in the seventh century. There are some bizarre elements who remember it: can you see the hands on the columns of the palace of Theodoric? That's what we are talking about! In the conversion to the Catholic worship many Aryan elements - such as references to the emperor and his court - were removed or "corrected". Th processions represented on both sides of the nave were initially processions of the courtiers of Theodoric, then transformed into martyrs and virgins with the inclusion of names and golden crowns.
The current Statutes, approved on January 22nd, , acknowledge the provisions of the Instruction in Higher Institutes of Religious Sciences, promulgated by the same Congregation on June 28th, The Institute fosters frequent dialogue between students and professors: lesson meetings are particularly important moments in this pedagogical relationship and therefore attendance is compulsory. Prosegue fino al 29 settembre mattina compreso. The initiative is part of the twentieth anniversary of the Encyclical Fides et Ratio and is proposed as its specific fruit. In fact, it intends to deepen the harmony between faith and reason in the perspective of St. Thomas, with the aim of making known and appreciating the philosophical and theological thought of Aquinas in its depth and relevance. At the first floor of the Palazzo dell'Apollinare, the Santa Croce Projects exhibition has been set up, presenting several Centers and Projects of research and teaching initiatives active in our University.
