I had just walked in the door of my hotel, clutching my stomach in a bit of a panic, unable to fit in another morsel of food, no matter how small or appealing. Halfway through my 10 day eating trip through Italy, I felt like a plump, overstuffed ricotta-filled cannoli , bursting at both ends. I told the woman at the front desk at my hotel that I could not eat one more bite of anything , or I would surely die. And indeed, she was right. Although I could easily point a finger at the restaurants for the gustory overload, I did have a role in the matter, since between all these meals, I consumed a rather indecent amount of gelato. Eating gelato in Italy is a national pastime. Like Americans who tote oversized paper cups of coffee wherever they go, Italians walk around lapping up cones of gelato instead.

As a member of the jury, I was tasked with tasting and evaluating 18 flavors of gelato prepared by 18 gelato chefs of Emilia-Romagna to select the three winners who will proceed in the competition, which will see the finalists compete at the Gelato Festival World Masters in When you taste gelato, there are several criteria to keep in mind, just as when you taste wine or olive oil. Taste, structure, creativity and presentation were the four guidelines we were called to evaluate during the competition, guided by gelato master Andrea Bandiera, a teacher at Carpigiani Gelato University and owner of Cremeria Scirocco, a top gelateria in Bologna. Particular importance was placed on the choice of ingredients, the mastery of the artisans in elaborating the recipe and the overall result evaluated through sight, taste and smell. The first factor to consider is visual.

There are few ice cream parlor from Gianni around the city, so if you really want an ice cream, you always have a place nearby where you can go. My favorite one is the Gianni in Via Montegrappa. They have a huge selection of ice-cream, the only problem when you enter is what to put on your cone. From the classic cioccolato, they have dark chocolate, orange chocolate, chilly dark chocolate etc etc. My favorite flavor is Mare d'Inverno, it's sale pistacchio, it's super special and tasty. They use fresh and local products, the use of cream make the ice-cream very heavy, so it can be easily a substitute of a lunch.

Gianni's pistacchio ice cream is probably the best i have ever tasted anywhere. If you are visiting Bologna or just passing through, take the time to make a stop there. You will not be disappointed. Very good ice cream! It could be a little less sweet. The mango flavour was awesome. The pistachio one is toi sweet. Despite a very long queue we waited to get our ice-cream… but we had higher expectations. The icecream was ok but nothing remarkable, they were done with too much cream that it lacked flavor.
